RED RIVER - 1939 Camelback Pony Truss Bridge

This camelback pony truss bridge was built in 1939. The bridge represents a joint effort between the Texas Highway Department and the Oklahoma Highway Commission to construct a bridge spanning the Red River and within both states. It was designed by the Oklahoma Highway Commission (with approval from the Texas Highway Department). The trusses were fabricated by Virginia Bridge and Iron Company of Roanoke, Virginia, and the bridge was built by Brooks and Dahlgren, Inc. of Oklahoma City. This bridge is the only remaining camelback pony truss bridge in the state of Texas. The bridge has 21 spans, each 100 ft. long, and totals 2,255 ft. The bridge is listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NR ID #96001518). The bridge is significant for facilitating major economic development within the region and especially between the major oil production markets of Oklahoma and Texas.
