Historic Structures Report
The purpose of this Historic Structure Report (HSR) is to document the history and current condition of the National Register‐listed Route 66 Ribbon Road (also known colloquially as the Nine‐Foot Highway and the Sidewalk Highway) in Ottawa County, Oklahoma, and develop treatment and management alternatives that will inform rehabilitation plans. The roadway is a unique and significant resource along the national length of Route 66 that serves the needs of both local residents and visitors from all over the world who come to drive and experience the road. The structure is in fair physical condition and in need of a rehabilitation strategy focused on the resource’s character‐defining features. This project describes treatments that would preserve the road with a goal of making it usable and available for future generations.
The activity that is the subject of this report has been financed in part with federal funds from the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. While neither ODOT nor FHWA participated in the preparation of this report, we find the report to be an exceptional summary of existing conditions and treatment measures to preserve the roadbed.
